Like the Last Word? Here’s a New Take on the Modern Classic

Canada Montreal Quebec Gin Scotch

Bartender Katherine Boushel, of Atwater Cocktail Club in Montréal, shakes up this riff on the Last Word using apple cider, a local staple. The cocktail’s dual-language name, meaning “the First Word,” reflects her city’s hybrid influences, as do the ingredients, with local gin nodding to the U.K. and Chartreuse nodding to France.

Le Premier Word

  • 3/4 oz Green Chartreuse
  • 1 oz London dry gin
  • 1/4 oz Fresh lemon juice
  • Apple cider, to top
  • 3 sprays Islay scotch

Garnish: Lemon peel

Glass: Double Old Fashioned
