The Whistler is focused squarely on its balanced cocktails, served at impressively high volumes on a nightly basis. Opened by Robert Brenner and Billy Helmkamp in 2008 with Paul McGee behind the stick, it hosts live music and DJs, and its storefront gallery window is refreshed monthly. The Whistler’s beercentric sister bar, Sleeping Village, opened in spring 2018 in Avondale.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: Depends. There is no fixed menu, so originals and throwbacks rotate regularly. Because they start at $6, you can afford to try a few.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Due to its small size, the space gets crowded rather quickly. And there’s almost always a line on weekend nights.
