After opening a graffiti-filled hip sushi spot, it only made sense that owner Mike Schatzman would then follow that with… a whiskey-focused tavern? Fortunately, Schatzman puts a lot of thought into whatever he does and the dark-wood-lined, Gilded-Era-feeling spot below street level in River North works really well. Here, comfort foods (think fried lobster tail; wagyu tartare with seared foie; Reuben with house-made corned beef) cozy up nicely with 80 bourbons, both recognizable and rare. Franklin Room offers a “Bottle Keep” program, allowing you to purchase rare bottles like Angel’s Envy 119 proof single barrel ($500 a bottle) or Elijah Craig 23 ($360 a bottle) and keep them locked at the bar, at no cost, for whenever you want to pop in for a drink.
THE DRINK TO DRINK:
The $12 Whiskey Boy, made with Angel’s Envy Bourbon, Very Old Barton Bourbon 100, Brovo Amaro Kim, sherry, Demerara and a blend of bitters.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
All whiskies can be poured in one-ounce servings. So you can taste more without breaking the bank.
