The Campbell

The Campbell

Formerly The Campbell Apartment, this Grand Central Terminal institution, popular with commuters, tourists and first dates, closed last year amid much controversy and rumors the space would be converted into a flashy nightclub by its new owners. Instead, they scrubbed and rebuilt it as an updated snapshot of itself. (Similar renovations have happened at Dante and Holiday Cocktail Lounge in recent years.) Longtime guests will appreciate the Gilded Age vibe and return of longtime bartender Paris DuRant, and newcomers will appreciate the new (non-threadbare) velvet chairs and banquettes and outdoor extension, The Campbell Terrace.

THE DRINK TO DRINK: Classics are the anchor here, stylistically, along with riffs on the Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule and Negroni. But seasonal house cocktails include crowd pleasers like the Summertime Spice (made with Casamigos blanco tequila, Ancho Reyes ancho chile liqueur, lemon juice and agave nectar).

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: The strict dress code (no jeans, no sneakers) that once often infuriated first-time guests has been relaxed. Still, it’s best to not dress like a slob.
