Named after a one-act comic opera that was once performed in the French Quarter, Sylvain’s consistently stellar and inventive cuisine is no laughing matter. The restaurant is an ideal balance of high-end American cuisine with cheeky touches, like a pairing of thinly sliced pomme frites and Champagne as an odd couple starter that steals the show, and a “supreme fancy” drinks menu option that pairs a shot of Jameson with a shot of Bailey’s. The bar program is unwavering in its execution of satisfying cocktails, including the Vicar or Whatever, which combines Bols Genever, sherry, white port, vermouth and Bénédictine. The uninitiated may scoff when you order the “Chick-Syl-Vain” sandwich (an upgraded riff on the less-than-gourmet Chik-Fil-A fast food favorite). With one bite, the fools will be incredibly jealous—and maybe order one on top of their own meal.
Know Before You Go: Indoor seating can easily get too squashed for comfort—and noisy. The courtyard, by contrast, is delightfully shady and relaxed.
