Melissa Axelrod and William Johnson’s Mockingbird was a neighborhood restaurant favorite in Oakland since 2013, closing in 2016 but reopening this June in a loftier downtown Oakland space. The food menu is simpler than the original, focused on comfort food like fried Brussels sprouts (a favorite from their old days), burgers and Moroccan spiced chicken with a corn and tomato panzanella.

THE DRINK TO DRINK: The Tough & Dirty Martini features Fords gin infused with basil and olive oil, Seedlip Garden 108 spirit in salted tincture form, Noilly Prat dry vermouth and a garnish of house-made pickled veggies.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: In the 4,200-square-foot space, note three large original art panels from local artist Rick Oginz, including panels of the Tribune Tower and Port of Oakland.
