McSorley's Old Ale House

WHY HERE: A cultural institution as much as a drinking one, this cash-only beer bar (where only two kinds of beer are served) has been satiating East Village drinkers since at least 1862. Work your way through the crowd, across the sawdust-covered floors, and settle in at a communal table for a pint or three.

WHY NOW: The bar has been through decades of ups and downs (including a brief closure in 2016) yet always perseveres. Straightforward burgers and simple apps like saltine crackers, cheese and onions soak up the brews.
