La Contenta Oeste

6 of 11:
La Contenta Oeste

Lately, there’s no shortage of casual Mexican joints in the city, but this one features two things most of the others don’t: a tightly focused agave spirits selection and bar manager Alex Valencia (formerly of The Flatiron Room). The result is excellent food and creative drinks that take tequila and mezcal beyond the Margarita. Bonus: There’s an extensive breakfast menu.

THE DRINK TO DRINK: The house cocktails definitely deserve exploration. El Infierno (Milagro tequila, Lejay crème de cassis liqueur, ginger beer, lime juice, bitters and mint) is a refreshing spring/summer cocktail that invites a second order.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Unlike its East Village older sister, Oeste takes reservations (online).
