In the northernmost region of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a former Wall Street broker decided to open a distillery, motivated by his love of gin and fledgling interest in the distilling process. With no experience in the trade and no outside funding, Steven DeAngelo and his brother, Phillip, launched the project on their own, producing their flagship product, Greenhook American dry gin, in early 2012. The gin debuted to strong reviews and boasts a low-temperature vacuum-distilling process that perfume makers use to preserve aromatics, resulting in a fragrant gin with vibrant flavor.
DON’T MISS THESE SPIRITS: Greenhook’s American dry gin is an aromatic powerhouse, but don’t neglect the distillery’s other offerings: Beach plum gin liqueur (inspired by traditional sloe gin and made with local Atlantic beach plums) and its Old Tom gin (crafted from pot-distilled corn, juniper and botanicals and aged in bourbon casks before being finished in oloroso sherry casks).
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Tours are available by appointment on Saturdays only, so be sure to call ahead to try all three of Greenhook’s bottlings in person.
