Gibson + Luce

Below NoMad’s Life Hotel (where “Life” magazine was once headquartered) resides this vibrant midcentury-modern retreat. Accessed through a nondescript door at the back of the lobby, the space reportedly served as a makeshift speakeasy for magazine staffers. Tuck into an endless blue banquette along two walls or sidle up to the lengthy bar for classics-inspired, spirit-forward drinks. Small plates from chef Michael Vignola include salmon tartare, a Hudson Valley foie gras slider with pickled apples, pizza and veggie dishes like endive and Castelfranco Caesar figs. Bonus: There’s an extensive vinyl library.

THE DRINK TO DRINK: The Little White Lie includes Chairman’s Reserve spiced rum, crème de violette, heavy cream, lemon and a smoky Laphroaig scotch float.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: American artist/illustrator Norman Rockwell reportedly lived in the building and spent time in the speakeasy.
