Since brothers Michael and Mano Thanos opened this bar in 2006, Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge has been a tiki escape on the island of Alameda, launching tiki greats like Martin Cate (pre-Smugglers Cove) and Suzanne Long (who opened Longitude). Forbidden Island carries the vibe well past puffer fish lights and exotica music to live surf and lounge bands, luaus and kitschy movie nights. The generally balanced, extensive cocktail list feels like a vacation, offering tiki classics, house drinks, “Famous Tiki Bar Tributes” and an extensive collection of rums.
THE DRINK TO DRINK:
While the Forbidden Island is the bar’s signature grog served in a take-home tiki mug, the Monkeypod is a crowd-pleaser of rum, tamarind, coconut and lime juices.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
A convenient rating system marked by 1 to 5 skull heads rates the strength of each drink so you know which ones pack the most punch.
