WHY HERE: When it opened in 2009, there was essentially nothing else around. This Queens cocktail den jumpstarted LIC’s now-thriving nightlife scene, serving throwback-style cocktails to rival anything in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

WHY NOW: Visit MoMA PS1 for some art, then head here for a great drink and bites by Hendu's Sandwich Shop (think beer-braised pork shoulder with fennel and apple on a seeded roll). The bar also spawned Hundredweight Big Ice, a hard-core ice company that produces massive pure ice blocks to top bars and events.
