Open at the beginning of the year in a two-sided space with a hidden beer garden in back, Almanac Taproom is a gain for beer geeks and fans of Almanac Beer Co.’s farm-to-barrel brews since it was founded in San Francisco in 2010 by Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan. With everything from saisons to sour ales brewed with locally sourced fruit, the taproom offers 15 rotating draft beers in a welcome range of pour sizes (two, 6.8 and 13.5 ounces). The food is top-notch, creative pub fare that sings with the beers.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: Alongside barrel-aged beers and special taproom-only releases, there are bottles and growlers to-go and special vintage releases. Look for tart, sour fruit ales brewed with everything from blueberries to nectarines, or beers like Beets By Drie, a pale ale brewed with beets and a range of hops.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Colorful house-made musubi showcase ingredients from green garlic to anchovies, while the Japanese fried chicken sandwich oozes juicy goodness. Add on a side of hop salt fries or kimchi Spam arancini.
