Open since 2007, 83 Proof’s low-key space is dramatically marked by a wall of spirits, especially dominant on whiskey with more than 300 bottles. While you’ll find whiskies from Germany to Japan, there is plenty on the bourbon front, too. Proprietor Marc Goldfine keeps the selection interesting, offering bourbons as wide-ranging as Journeyman Featherbone Bourbon, a four-grain bourbon from Michigan, to Hillrock Solera Aged Bourbon from the Hudson Valley in New York state.
THE DRINK TO DRINK:
83 Proof works without a menu, making drinks to order and based on preferences. The name of the game is balanced, booze-forward drinks like Radio Flyer featuring Buffalo Trace, Campari and Luxardo Maraschino liqueur.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Mobbed with the Financial District set, the bar is often deafeningly loud and packed. Slip upstairs to the cozy mezzanine looking down over the bar. Or try early afternoons or Saturday nights when the bar is not is overrun with the after-work crowd.
