There’s a bar somewhere in the world for every strange fascination, whether it be a long-running BBC show, a sci-fi film, vampires or just the joy of smoking a pipe with your brew in what looks like someone’s living room. From the inside of a massive tree in South Africa to a lagoon in Iceland, these are some bizarre bars that are worthy of a visit.
Looking for a bone to pick? This Swiss drinking den is designed with arches modeled after massive vertebrae and thrones with replica pelvic bones for head rests. It all makes perfect sense when you realize this is the bar at the museum housing the work of HR Giger, whose work inspired the movie Alien.
Carbon dating has shown that this giant tree in Modjadjiskloof, South Africa, is more than 1,700 years old. You’ve only been able to drink inside its trunk since 1993, though, when the owners put in a bar and wine cellar.
For the sci-fi nerds who don’t like Dr. Who or Alien, maybe Jupiter Disco—which makes you feel like you’re in Blade Runner—can do the trick. The menu runs across a small, old TV screen and DJs often pack the dance floor, but you can also expect top-notch cocktails.
You could predict the decor of Tokyo’s vampire-themed bar, where a skull and elaborate candelabra sit atop a coffin and the chairs are a vibrant blood red. Stoke your appetite with a red apéritif garnished with tiny skulls.
Would you like to drink in a fairy-infested forest cum wax museum? Barcelona has just the place for you. Amid the gnomes and talking trees, you’ll find a table filled with light-up butterflies, making this bar feel both enchanted and a bit creepy.
The only thing creepy about this East Bay bar just how much it feels like you’re sitting in a stranger’s house. But don’t let that stop you if you’re after not just a drink but pipe tobacco or a nice cigar as well, because this place is also a smoke shop.
While it’s officially a “steampunk bar,” everyone knows Brooklyn’s Way Station as the place where you can get a picture in front of the time machine/telephone booth modeled after the one in Dr. Who. Unlike a lot of over-the-top theme bars, though, this one feels like a low-key neighborhood hangout—with really great drinks!
If you want to pair a spa experience with a night of boozing, look no further than Iceland’s Lagoon Bar. You can enjoy wine or beer in the lagoon. Or if you take a break from soaking in the crystal clear lagoon, you can throw on a towel and head to the indoor bar.
Think you know the booze?
Let’s start with some basics.
