Well, that fantasy is at the heart of a number of boozy ad campaigns currently running. And Hendricks and Owen, in addition to other Hollywood A-listers, are now showing up with increasing frequency in spirits advertising. It’s no coincidence, since the liquor industry only began airing TV commercials a few years ago.
So, mix up a tipple and check out seven of our favorite spirited celebrity pitchmen and women.
You know him as one half of the 1970s stoner comedy duo Cheech & Chong, but Richard "Cheech" Marin is also a respected collector of Chicano art. One of his favorite Latin artworks inspired the label art for the bottles of Tres Papalote mezcal, a joven (unaged) expression distilled from wild cupreata agave. It's got a flavor that L.A. Magazine calls "approachable with just a subtle smokiness." (We see what you did there.)
We’ll be honest: A tequila-fueled night on the town with Kiefer Sutherland sounds pretty epic. And that’s the main theme of José Cuervo Tequila’s “Have a Story” campaign, which launched last month and includes a number of unforgettable scenes. Have your own incredible story? The ad encourages viewers to post on social media sites with #CuervoStory. Read those at your own risk...
Fans of the hit show Seinfeld will immediately recognize antagonistic lawyer Jackie Chiles (AKA actor Phil Morris) in Jim Beam Honey’s recent series of videos. The campaign features Beam’s new flavored whiskey and the supposedly long-standing problem of bears stealing honey. Jackie as a result is suing the bears for their “rampant honey theft.” The ads encourage people to tweet with #suethebears, and Beam has promised to donate $100 for every tweet using the hashtag to Pollinator Partnership, a nonprofit that works to prevent colony collapse disorder.
There are few shows in TV history that are as booze-soaked as Mad Men. So it should come as no surprise that Johnnie Walker recruited the talented Christina Hendricks (Joan Holloway) to help them seduce drinkers. (The sultry star was approached by the brand after she mentioned in an Esquire interview that she finds it sexy when a man orders Scotch.) While she admitted to us that she wasn’t a big whisky fan in the past, “now, I’m a regular Scotch drinker.” Her favorite dram is the new Johnnie Walker Platinum but her cocktail of the summer was the Double Down, a mix of peaty Johnnie Walker Double Black with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime. It’s like a Dark n’ Stormy but has a “richer, smokier depth,” Hendricks says. Who are we to argue?
It’s hard to listen to Kid Rock without sipping on some bourbon. So it only makes sense that the singer has been partnering with Jim Beam over the last few years. Back in 2009, Rock helped launch the brand’s wildly successful flavored-whiskey line Red Stag, and this year, another of the company’s whiskies, Devil’s Cut, is sponsoring his current concert tour.
Check out this new video of Rock being Jim Beam's distiller for a day. We can only dream of the company parties he would throw...
The super-smooth and devilishly handsome Clive Owen could probably sell snow to Eskimos. And at the beginning of the year, Three Olives Vodka enlisted the Oscar-nominated actor to be the face of its $20 million ad campaign. (The vodka also got a bottle redesign last January.) Though we can certainly see him drinking the English company's plain quadruple-distilled, wheat-based spirit, it’s hard to imagine Owen enjoying any of the brand’s more than 20 different flavored vodkas including s’mores and bubblegum.
There are few pairings hotter than burlesque and cocktails. And the reigning queen of burlesque, the talented Dita Von Teese, has been working as the spokeswoman and “Global Brand Ambassadress” for orange liqueur brand Cointreau since early 2008. She’s even helped to create signature cocktails, designed a limited-edition bar-in-a-handbag and given alluring performances at brand events. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
