Central Chicago | Brought to you by Galliano
As the legend goes, the Harvey Wallbanger is named for a California surfer named Harvey. His favorite drink at the bars he frequented in Long Beach, California, was a screwdriver (vodka and orange juice) topped off with a bit of Galliano, a golden liqueur developed in the late 1800s and made from a distillation of more than 80 herbs and flowers.
After winning a particularly important surfing competition, Harvey hit the bar to celebrate, imbibing too many of his favorite cocktails then staggered from the bar, surf board in hand, bouncing against the walls as he exited. Thus his beloved drink was renamed the Harvey Wallbanger. The cocktail became the official business class drink of TWA in the 1970s but was forgotten soon after.
Now, the Harvey Wallbanger is poised for a comeback, as bartenders across the country reimagine the drink. Want to try a Harvey Wallbanger at a bar near you? Here’s where to find one in your neighborhood. Nearly 50 years after its invention, the Harvey Wallbanger is #StillBanging.
