Preheat the oven to 250° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a medium bowl, mix together the lemon juice and salt.
Peel the apples (and if you want, chop in half) and add to the lemon juice-salt mixture and let stand about 30 minutes.
Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and let drain for 20 minutes. With a paring knife, carve faces into the apples, then transfer the apples to the preparedbaking sheet (if chopped in half, place the apples face-side up).
Bake until apples are dry and starting to brown, about 90 minutes. Once done, remove from baking sheet and press cloves into the eyes (if desired).
