Bourbon is typically used as the base of Julep cocktails, but the baking-spice backbone of rye is uniquely suited to stand up to the inherent sweetness of the drink. This recipe also uses a basil-ginger-mint syrup to highlight the herbaceous notes and mint finish of Redemption rye whiskey. It will be hard to go back to the traditional Julep after trying this.
- 2 oz Redemption rye whiskey
- 1/2 oz Basil-ginger-mint syrup*
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 7 leaves Mint
- Garnish: Mint leaf
- Garnish: Basil leaf
Rub 7 mint leaves firmly along the interior of a Julep mug.
Add ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.
Strain over crushed ice into the mug.
Garnish with a mint leaf and basil leaf.
*Basil-ginger-mint syrup: Blanche 1 oz fresh mint and 1 oz fresh basil and add to blender with 2 oz fresh grated ginger and 2 cups simple syrup. Blend and strain out solids.
