While the term “Old Fashioned” refers to a particular style of drink (spirit, water, sugar and bitters), it’s one that’s become synonymous with whiskey, and you’ll usually find it served with either bourbon or rye. Woodman’s choice of American single malt, which is made from 100 percent malted barley, brings a different dimension to what we know the Old Fashioned to be—in place of the toasty sweetness of bourbon or rye’s spicy bite, the Porter’s Old Fashioned offers a backbone of rich nuttiness that, as Woodman noted, is the perfect canvas for a homemade porter syrup and Bitters Lab Charred Cedar & Currant bitters, all accented by a nod to the classic Old Fashioned: a dash of Angostura. Here’s how to make the Porter’s Old Fashioned at home.
Add the whiskey, porter syrup and bitters into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.
Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over 3 or 4 ice cubes.
Express the oil from an orange peel and drop in to garnish.
*Polygamy porter syrup: Pour 1 can of Wasatch Polygamy nitro porter into a saucepan and gently warm (do not allow to boil). Add an equal or slightly greater amount of cane sugar, and stir to dissolve completely. Let cool.
