Pom-Blood-Orange Old Fashioned

Pom Blood Orange Old Fashioned

From bartender Nick Mautone, who also created the Bloody Kirby and Holiday at the Hive, this cocktail combines two wintertime favorite fruits: blood oranges and pomegranate. He brings them together in a format similar to that of a Wisconsin Old Fashioned, muddling the fruit with sugar and bitters before adding the spirit and shaking it all together. Vodka is, of course, an uncommon spirit choice for an Old Fashioned-style cocktail, but its neutral flavor lets this drink’s fruit components shine.

Blood orange is a winter season citrus fruit with maroon flesh and a sweet flavor with a hint of something akin to raspberry. Pomegranate juice has, of course, been a fad for several years, but this recipe calls for the arils, or seeds. If you don’t feel like cracking open a fresh pomegranate yourself, the arils can be purchased already extracted and often packaged in bags at many supermarkets.

Ingredients

  • 2 lengths of blood orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon pomegranate arils (seeds)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 ounces vodka (such as Grey Goose)
  • Garnish: blood orange twist

Steps

  1. Add the blood orange peels, pomegranate arils, sugar and bitters into a shaker and muddle gently.

  2. Add the vodka and fill with ice, and shake until well-chilled.

  3. Double-strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

  4. Garnish with an orange twist.
