Thomas Tew Rum represents the only rum distillery in the state, and started in 2006 in honor of Newport’s title as the former rum capital of the world.
It takes its name from Thomas Tew, the Rhode Island Pirate. It’s rich amber color and vanilla, caramel and brown spice is imparted from aging in once-used American oak bourbon barrels. This traditional-style rum can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or featured in one of their specialty cocktails! When guests come to tour the distillery, they can opt for the Thomas Tew Rum tasting in which they try the spirit at three different stages of the distilling process to better understand the journey into the final product.
Offering three year-round beers, seasonal favorites, and many limited-release brews, Newport Storm Brewery is a favorite among locals and New Englanders. One can find our be on tap at many historic restaurants in Newport including Brick Alley Pub, 22 Bowens, The White Horse Tavern, The Red Parrot and much more! Their flagship beer, Hurricane Amber Ale, leads the pack as quickly the most popular brew, followed closely by its other year-round companions the India Point Ale and the Rhode Island Blueberry beer.
When guests visit the brewery and distillery, they have the chance to taste the rum, beer (or both!) while they tour the facility learning about the brewing and distilling process on an elevated tour deck overlooking the production floor crew hard at work. Sampling is 21+, but the tours are family-friendly and a great way to break up an afternoon in the sun, switching up the salty air smell with the smell of fresh beer and rum.

Coastal Extreme Brewing Company is Rhode Islandâ€™s Microbrewery, brewing Newport Storm beers since 1999. In the spring of 2010, they built a new facility on the north end of Newport on JT Connell Road. Their Visitors Center is open year-round for tours and tastings from 12pm-5pm (closed Tuesday). In 2006 they began the Newport Distilling Company, becoming the first distillers in Rhode Island in 135 years. Newport Distilling Company focuses on one signature spirit, Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum, named after the famous Newport pirate. Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum is an authentic aged pot still rum of the type that had been made in Newportâ€™s colonial heyday.
