If your dram of whiskey is feeling a little dull, now you can turn it into a mysterious, code-breaking experience.
Glenlivet Code is a new limited-edition single malt debuted with absolutely no information about its casks or flavor profile. Instead, imbibers are encouraged to use their whiskey education to try to discern the properties of the scotch themselves.
Each black bottle comes with a QR code on the label for the purchaser to scan via Shazam using their smartphone. The Speyside distillery then produces a hologram of the whiskey’s master distiller in a virtual room on your phone (no Tupac-inspired lifesize hologram, unfortunately) to guide you in a tasting of the whiskey. You’ll be invited to take a quiz to guess the elements of the whiskey and will be given a score based on your answers.
While you can share your score via social media and boast about your superior palate when you receive higher scores than your friends, you won’t be able to find out the actual flavor profile until the end of the year.
Gimmick or not, it’s a good way to test your taste buds and really pay attention to your whiskey. But is it worth the $120 price tag? We’ll have to find out.
