A Sloth Helped Brew a Beer in LA

Contributed by

Thinking up a new craft beer takes careful consideration, so who better to take their time choosing ingredients than a sloth? That’s exactly what Charlie the sloth of the L.A. Zoo did, and his brew is finally ready for its debut.

Slothen Brau, a German-style kolsch brewed by Simmzy’s with ingredients selected by the two-toed sloth, was created for this year’s Brew at the L.A. Zoo festival. The annual event takes place on August 2 and will be one of the only places you can try the limited-edition beer. If you can’t make it to the fest, it will also be available at Simmzy’s locations.

A zoo video shows Charlie choosing the beer’s ingredients from a selection of options including roses, pears, beets, yams, zucchini and squash. “He went straight for the roses and straight for the pear,” says Megan, an animal keeper at the zoo.

BREAKING: The L.A. Zoo's resident Linné's two-toed sloth, Charlie, has claw-selected ingredients for a custom beer that will be available only at Brew at the L.A. Zoo on August 2 and at Simmzy's Burbank and five other Simmzy's Pub locations for a limited time. Flavored with rose and pear, this crisp, refreshing German kolsch-style beer is aptly called… wait for it… "Slothen Bräu." We're grateful to Simmzy's brewmaster Brian Herbertson for making it all happen, and are excited to share this special Charlie-inspired beer with guests.
