There have been plenty of studies showing that moderate red wine consumption can be good for your health. We’ve even seen a 100-year-old attribute her longevity to it. But a new study claims you might actually be better off reaching for your favorite craft beer.
The new research from California’s Polytechnic State University shows that the B3 vitamin found in brewers yeast can lower cardiovascular disease risk, lower cholesterol and reduce atherosclerosis.
“Your instances of heart disease and your instances of type 2 diabetes decreases on an amount that’s comparable, if not a little bit more, than if you are drinking red wine,” professor Mike McCullough of Polytechnic State University told Men’s Health.
It’s important to note that this is only true for craft beer, not the mass-produced beer we see most often on supermarket shelves. Those health benefits are lost in the pasteurization process.
