Frank Gehry and Karim Rashid walk into a bar…It sounds like the start to a bad joke, but spirits brands around the world have increasingly been turning to star architects and designers to create ever more innovative packaging. Here are a few of these interesting partnerships.
AnestasiA Vodka ($39):
AnestasiA Vodka is like no other spirit: It calls itself “the world’s first tingling vodka.” That dubious distinction aside, the company had world-renowned designer Karim Rashid come up with a bottle (pictured above), which looks like a giant icicle. It’s stunning enough that you might want it on your bar, even if you never open it.
Geoff McFetridge X Bushmills Irish Whiskey Decanter ($600):
Famed Irish whiskey Bushmills recently worked with graphic artist Geoff McFetridge, who was the art director of the Beastie Boys’ magazine Grand Royal and has done projects for Nike, Pepsi, Stüssy, Burton Snowboards, Girl Skateboards and Patagonia, to release 75 blown-glass decanters. Each vessel is in the shape of a set of hands, comes in a matching cloth bag and can be filled with your favorite liquor.
Chivas 18 by Pininfarina (starts at $140):
Who knows style better than Italians? That’s why Chivas Regal Scotch asked famous car-design and engineering firm Pininfarina to create special editions of its 18-year-old whisky. There are three versions, which start at $140 for the metal-and-wood Limited Edition 1 and go all the way up to the seven-foot-tall $100,000 Mascherone.
Perry’s Tot Navy Strength Gin ($30) & Dorothy Parker American Gin ($29):
It’s hard to list all of Milton Glaser’s major accomplishments, but we’re particularly fond of his I Love NY logo and his iconic Bob Dylan poster. He also designed the Brooklyn Brewery logo and the packaging for the New York Distilling Company’s Dorothy Parker and Perry’s Tot gins. Both eye-catching spirits feature Glaser’s own drawings.
Wyborowa Exquisite Vodka ($30):
One of the earliest designer bottles we know of was produced by Frank Gehry and commissioned by Polish vodka Wyborowa. It of course looks like a soaring, twisted-glass skyscraper. While it’s no longer being made, you may still be able to find one in stores or online.
