A fire broke out late Tuesday evening at a Jim Beam warehouse, destroying approximately 40,000 barrels of spirits.

A second warehouse also caught fire during the blaze but was extinguished.

The fire is still burning, and efforts to control the damage may extend into Wednesday evening. Reports said that firefighters were instructed to allow a contained burn in order to destroy any leftover spirits in the debris. Still, it may not be enough to stop contaminated water from entering a nearby creek and the Kentucky River. When a Barton 1792 Distillery warehouse collapsed in 2008, it polluted nearby waterways.

Lightning was spotted in the area Tuesday night and may be the cause of the fire.

Beam Suntory told The Washington Post that the warehouse contained relatively young whiskey, the loss of which will not impact availability.

It has been a tough year for bourbon, with another warehouse collapsing just last month.
