German Olympic Athletes Are Drinking Beer During the Winter Games

Drinking lots of beer and exceptional athletic ability don’t generally go hand in hand. But German athletes might be proving that assumption all wrong.

Krombacher brewery delivered 3,500 liters of beer to the athletes’ village in Pyeongchang so German Olympians can drink its special nonalcoholic, isotonic brew. According to The New York Times, research from 2009 by sports medicine teacher Johannes Scherr found that athletes who drank nonalcoholic beer saw significantly reduced inflammation and suffered “fewer upper respiratory infections.”

“It tastes good, and it’s good for the body,” German alpine ski racer Linus Strasser told The New York Times. “Alcohol-free wheat beer is extremely healthy. That’s why it’s good for us sports guys.”

Germany currently has the second most medals in the competition behind Norway. “Sometimes, an alcoholic beer can also be good,” Strasser added.

Whatever they’re doing, it seems to be working.
