What Happened When San Francisco Hit the Mexico City Bar Scene | Partner Tip

Did you miss the Mexico City round of Bar Shift?

You’ll want to watch the video replay below. Monday, August 17 was a one-of-a-kind occasion, as Bar Shift went international for the first time ever. Two San Francisco bartenders, Caitlin Laman of Trick Dog and John Codd of Gaspar and The Cognac Room, headed south to Mexico City to work a shift at the celebrated bar Limantour. There, the pair shook signature Bacardi cocktails for a boisterous crowd.

Laman, who runs Trick Dog in San Francisco’s Mission district, took inspiration from a previous trip to Oaxaca when developing her Bar Shift cocktails. In southern Mexico, she discovered her love of agua de jamaica, a refreshing beverage made with hibiscus flowers. With that in mind, Laman created her Calle Las Dalias, a vibrant cocktail made with Bacardi Superior, lime juice, hibiscus syrup and a surprising rim: Sal de gusano, otherwise known as worm salt, was a nod to Mexico City that added savory flavor and texture to the edge of Laman’s cocktail.

While Laman was manning Limantour’s upper-level bar with bartender Jose Luis Leon, John Codd was pouring Bacardi cocktails downstairs with Limantour’s Adrian Borgaro and Oscar Valle. The beverage director for San Francisco’s Gaspar Brasserie, Codd quickly took to the warm Mexico City weather by serving his Summer Shorts cocktail. The refreshing blend began with sweet summer cantaloupe, which was accompanied by Bacardi Añejo, Ancho Reyes chile liqueur and lime juice, all loaded into a Collins glass.

Watch Codd whip up his Summer Shorts cocktail below and go behind the scenes of his rousing shift at Limantour with Laman. In addition to their Mexico City Bar Shift, Laman and Codd were treated to a surprise tour of Bacardi’s stunning distillery hosted by the Bacardi team and Bacardi maestro Jose Sanchez. Take a peek at their distillery experience, complete with a walk-through of the fermentation and distillation processes and the maestro’s explanation of why the distillery is the heart of Bacardi rum.

Both bartenders agreed that the Bar Shift was an incredible success, with Laman calling the experience “the best guest shift I’ve ever worked.” The international event created a strong sense of community among all the bartenders involved and celebrated their shared passion of creating great drinks for their guests.
