Yuengling Beer, a cult favorite on the East Coast, may be in trouble after its owner made a controversial political endorsement.
The wealthy fifth-generation owner, Dick Yuengling, gave Donald Trump’s son Eric a private tour of the brand’s historic plant in Pottsvile, Pennsylvania earlier this week. During the tour, Yuengling reportedly told Trump, “Our guys are behind your father. We need him in there.”
After news spread of Yuengling’s support for the Republican candidate, patrons of the beer brand flocked to social media to call for a boycott. The protesters included openly gay Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Sims, who called on a number of Philadelphia gay-owned establishments to join the boycott of the brand.
JR’s, a popular gay bar in Washington, D.C., even went as far to post a video of them removing a Yuengling’s tap from their bar. Manager David Perruzza argued for the change, saying, “When people support things that don’t support [our community], then we don’t support them.”
The brew brand is expected to lose many loyal customers due to the remarks. When asked to comment on the situation, Yuengling claimed he would be happy to give Hillary Clinton a tour of his brewery, but didn’t go further, saying, “I’ve said enough.”
