Living Legends Who Prove Booze Helps You Live Longer

Contributed by

Each week, a new story comes out telling of the latest craze to help you live longer. Typically it’s a new superfood or giving up something that you love to indulge in (like booze!). News of a few seasoned ladies celebrating triple-digit birthdays seems to suggest that the new secret life elixir may just be waiting for you at your local liquor store. From the tiniest bit of whiskey every night to multiple cocktails a day, these ladies all agree that a helping of booze every day keeps them living longer and stronger.

Boozy secret: drop of whiskey every day

Grace Jones, who is set to celebrate her 110th birthday this month, has a unique secret to her long life.

“I don’t drink, but I have a little drop of whiskey every night,” she told BBC News. She claims she still feels the same as she did in her sixties, with no aches or pains. Maybe a little bit goes a long way after all!

Age: 111
Boozy secret: three beers and a shot of whiskey a day

At age 105, Agnes Fenton said she drank three cans of Miller High Life and a shot of Johnnie Walker Blue Label for 70 years. The reason: The beer was prescribed to her by a doctor back in 1943. (The shot is just because she enjoys the taste!)

Unfortunately, she had to stop a few years ago, as her caregivers didn’t want her drinking due to her shrinking appetite. Despite that, Fenton firmly believes that her daily drinking habits are what helped her become a supercentenarian.

Age: 103
Boozy secret: beer every day

Having turned 103 just this past August, Mildred Bowers downs a hoppy beverage everyday at 4 p.m. at her assisted-living facility.

This routine started a while ago, after she asked some nurses in the facility if she could have a beer. After checking with her doctor, they decided it was OK, and Bowers began enjoying a brew in the afternoon every day.

Age: 100 (or is it?!)
Boozy secret: six Gin & Tonics a day

You may have heard of this elderly imbiber who discovered her love for gin at age 18 and estimated she has imbibed 4,264 bottles of gin since her habit began.

On her frequent Gin & Tonic indulging, she told the Suffolk Gazette: “I have two at lunchtime, one at tea time with a biscuit and then three more during the evening while I do my knitting.” Sounds like a balanced diet to us!

But, sadly for all of us, the Suffolk Gazette is a spoof newspaper, and Mabel simply a made-up bit of fake news. But you cannot deny the amazing staying power of Mildred, Agnes and Grace!
