How to Make a Mint Julep

How to Cocktail: Mint Julep

While it tastes great on Derby Day, you’ll enjoy fixing this classic cocktail all year long. The bourbon drink recipe is always a refreshing treat.

INGREDIENTS:

  • .25 oz Raw sugar syrup (one part raw sugar, one part water)
  • 8 Mint leaves
  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • Garnish: Bitters (optional) and mint sprig
  • Glass: Julep

PREPARATION:
In a Julep cup or rocks glass, lightly muddle the mint and syrup. Add the bourbon and pack tightly with crushed ice. Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside. Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome and garnish with a few drops of bitters, if desired, and a mint sprig.

Old Forester is the official bourbon of Churchill Downs and the only one they use to make tens of thousands of juleps on Oaks and Derby.

Whatever you do, do not use Southern Comfort. Just good bourbon. I use Bulleit.
