D.C. has become loaded with whiskey bars, which isn't a bad thing unless you happen to be a gin fanatic. Good thing there's Wisdom, from owner Erik Holzherr. The bar happens to predate most of these new Johnny-come-lately whiskey bars anyway. Open since 2008, it's worth a trip all the way down Pennsylvania Avenue to the southeast fringes and the Anacostia River, offering more than 100 gins—by far the most in the area. Find your ideal Martini from its range of house specifications, including a choice of garnish, the gin-to-vermouth ratio and multiple levels of dirtiness.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: The Eminent Domaine is a house favorite, with Bluecoat gin, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, amaro, pressed apple and lemon juice.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: While the bar supports you ordering a Martini your way, it also shakes the hell out of your Martini unless you ask for it stirred and strongly insist that the only real Martini is a Gin Martini.
