Trendy Mexican is everywhere in NYC these days, but this Chelsea bar-restaurant from the folks who brought us Black Ant, Gardenia and Ofrenda is worth many visits. Attractively plated rustic-cool dishes dressed with plenty of avocado, queso fresco, poblano and chile sauces complement a mezcal- and tequila-heavy bar. Or pair ice-cold cervezas with Baja-style fish tacos. The decor is equal parts East Los Angeles skate park and Tijuana chop shop, and cocktails (including customizable Margaritas) emphasize the agave spirits. There’s brunch service on weekends too.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: House-made ginger beer appears in several cocktails, including One Night in Tijuana (mezcal, ginger beer, lime juice, guava puree, agave syrup, cucumber).
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: The chef, Mario Hernandez, has legit street cred. He started cooking in his grandmother’s kitchen in Morelos, Mexico.
