It took more than two years for veteran NYC barman Giuseppe González (Painkiller/PKNY, Golden Cadillac) to bring to life his personal vision of a welcoming, no-nonsense—yet high quality—bar. It’s designed like an English gastropub, with custom-made arched ceiling, wood paneling and parquet flooring. But the heart of the bar beats true-blue NYC: The bar’s mascots are the NY Public Library lion statues, and Mandy Blouin’s engaging sketches of prominent and not-so-prominent New Yorkers line the walls. It’s González’s expertly crafted, sometimes irreverent cocktails, along with chef Alex Garcia’s elevated LES-influenced pub food, that keeps you coming back for more.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: Start with the refreshing Horse Apple, featuring fresh apple juice, horseradish and your choice of spirit. Move to the Soyer’s Highball, a 19th-century blue drink with no curaçao.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Super friendly bartenders will help you get started, and they don’t mind if all you seek is a beer and a shot.
