Southern Efficiency is the whiskey-centric bar of Derek Brown's connected trio of separate establishments on 7th Street in Shaw. It's so named for a JFK quote in which he called D.C. and its politics a city of both Southern efficiency and Northern charm. There are draft cocktails, local brews and seasonal specialties behind the bar. An extensive whiskey list is appropriately focused on American wares, although it diverges into a smaller lineup of scotch and Irish whiskey, as well. Down-home Southern fare like rolled oyster hot browns goes well with the whiskey.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: The summer's Camp IWannaWhiskey cocktail lineup showcased the Wet Hot American Sazerac, with rye, Pineau Des Charentes, rum, pineapple gum arabic, Peychaud's and absinthe.
