Located in a former flower shop adjacent to vintage diner Johnny’s Grill (both were revamped in 2015), Mezcaleria serves traditional mezcal as well as other agave-based spirits from lesser-known Mexican states. The man behind the menu is Jay Schroeder, who served as Frontera’s beverage director. Rest assured, this is no tequila bar. There’s a thorough bottle list organized by region and a handful of refreshing, colorful mezcal-based cocktails.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: The deliciously earthy Magnetic Pole Reversal, with sotol, Suze gentian liqueur, cucumber, coriander, lime and basil.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Johnny’s greasy-spoon menu isn’t necessarily the best complement to Mezcaleria’s delicate cocktails. Though after a few rounds, you may not care.
