Serving a totally separate menu from its acclaimed upstairs parent, Liholiho Yacht Club, Louie’s Gen-Gen Room is Liholiho’s tiny, sexy basement counterpart. A reservations-only policy (with reservations available one week in advance and held by credit card) may seem like a lot of work for a bar, but it’s one of the most delightful food and drink newcomers to open this summer, glowing with candlelight, teal blue banquettes and a hot pink palm tree wall.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: Cocktails are created by Yanni Kehagiaras, who also oversees Liholiho’s bar, with Lounge Act (Koloa rum from Hawaii, coconut milk, coconut water and whispers of toasted coconut) the crowd-pleaser, and El Nino (Arette Tequila, guava, Amaro Nonino and lime) the tropical-tequila sleeper hit.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Louie’s serves an exclusive food menu worth seeking out on its own, whether French onion dip and potato chips topped with trout roe caviar or splurge-worthy Tsar Nicolai estate caviar, or an array of dreamy waffles, like a bone marrow butter waffle, okonomiyaki waffle with housemade spam or a buckwheat furikake waffle topped with avocado, toasted walnuts and black sesame.
