Tucked beneath the shadow of the BQE, only a couple of blocks from Union Pool, is this surprisingly light and airy Peruvian-themed spot. Chef Erik Ramirez (an Eleven Madison Park alum) is Peruvian-American, and bar manager Lynnette Marrero (Speed Rack) has roots in Puerto Rico, so the tribute and dishes are legit. A crisp, modernist resort decor transports you away from the traffic and chaos on the other side of floor-to-ceiling windows, and contemporary dishes, including complex vegetarian offerings, maintain the escapist fantasy. The cocktail menu features an occasionally changing punch on tap and a variety of whimsically named “shaken” and “stirred” options (The Llama Del Rey features pisco, red wine, rum, grilled pineapple, pink peppercorn and chicha morada, a sweet corn beverage popular in Peru). The spot is open for brunch and dinner and offers a small rooftop space for private events or a bit of fresh-air drinking. THE DRINK TO DRINK: Red states, blue states … Go purple with the Flying Purple Pisco (pisco is the national spirit of Peru), featuring Macchu Pisco Quebranta, purple potato purée, egg white, lemon and lime. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: In addition to inventive cocktails, wine and beer, the bar serves up a number of teas, coffees (including cold brew) and Inca Kola, a Peruvian soft drink.
