Since 1937, Li Po Cocktail Lounge has been serving drinks to the thirsty denizens (and tourists) of Chinatown. In fact, Li Po was the first dive bar to grace Chinatown and is named after the Chinese Poet also known as Li Bai. Enter the enchanting red doors set deep in the rock arch that defines the bar’s entrance and you’ll find all the usual suspects amidst a unique collection of rice wines and liquors. One such rice-based liquor is the secret ingredient in Li Po’s famous Chinese Mai Tai, said to be so good it drew Anthony Bourdain out of the airport during an extended layover. Be sure to order it and take note of the golden Buddha statue offering its enlightened gaze over the bar––you may soon be joining the Buddha in enlightenment after a couple of those Mai Tais.
