Named after the date of India’s independence from British rule, August 1 Five opened in November as a convenient pre- or post-SF Jazz, symphony, ballet or opera stop. It’s also easily accessible from the Civic Center BART/Muni station. The teal and velvet-tinged space works just as well for bites and drinks as it does for a full dinner.
THE DRINK TO DRINK: Business partner Brian Howard knows his cocktails and created a delightful menu that plays with Indian flavors. A classic Dark & Stormy gets the twist it was meant for: Old Monk rum, lime and Angostura bitters are served classic Daiquiri-style in a coupe topped with a vibrant ginger foam.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Chef Manish Kumar Tyagi (from acclaimed Rasika in D.C.) serves inspired modern Indian cuisine. Think bison keema or lobster laced with mustard seeds, lemon, curry leaves, coconut milk and wakame (seaweed).
