Good drinking; great design.
The two were bound to find a common language. If the liquid inside the bottle is art, it makes perfect sense for the container to be the same thing. And many top liquor brands have partnered with famous designers to create amazing bottles.
Japanophiles: Love tequila? This one’s for you. For the 2013 holiday season, Patrón enlisted Evan Yurman, chief men’s and timepiece design director for luxury jewelry designer David Yurman, to come up with a special top for its añejo tequila. The reusable stopper is modeled after the handguards of 18th-century Japanese samurai swords, and is made of zinc and gunmetal electroplating with 24-karat gold detail.
Inspired by a metal flask lost on a French battlefield in 1569 and recovered centuries later, the elaborate decanter for this equally luxe cognac is designed and produced by Baccarat, the French maker of fine crystal. Like the up-to-100-year-old brandy it contains, the bottle melds luxury with just a touch of history.
What’s inside the bottle may be a simple, classic vodka, but the company had world-renowned industrial designer and architect Karim Rashid come up with the bottle, which is made from recycled materials and looks like a giant icicle. It’s so stunning, you may never open it.
Famed Irish whiskey Bushmills recently collaborated with graphic artist Geoff McFetridge, who was the art director of the the Beastie Boys’ magazine Grand Royal and has done projects for Nike, Pepsi, Stüssy, Burton Snowboards, Girl Skateboards and Patagonia. Their project: 75 blown-glass decanters, each in the shape of a set of hands and presented in a matching cloth bag.
Who knows style better than Italians? That’s why Chivas Regal asked for special editions of its 18-year-old Scotch whisky from famous car-design and engineering firm Pininfarina, whose talent is behind such classic autos as the Ferrari 330 and the Alfa Romeo Spider. There are three versions, which start at $140 for the metal-and-wood Limited Edition 1 and go all the way up to the $100,000, seven-foot-tall Mascherone.
It’s hard to list all of graphic artist Milton Glaser’s major accomplishments, but we’re particularly fond of his I Love NY logo and his iconic Bob Dylan poster. He also designed the Brooklyn Brewery logo and the packaging for the New York Distilling Company’s Dorothy Parker and Perry’s Tot gins. Both eye-catching spirits feature Glaser’s own drawings.
