We love cocktails and films. The only thing that’s better is a movie character who likes to drink.
From James Bond sipping his signature cocktails to Frank the Tank putting down a beer bong in record time, we’ve come to appreciate just about every type of boozy movie moment there is. (Perhaps the Academy should consider a new Oscar category...)
So we’ve put together a list of the top ten male movie characters we’d like to have a drink—or a night out—with. Who would you add to our list?
This is a no-brainer, right? There’s no way we could pass up a couple Martinis with history’s most debonair secret agent. Whether he’s ordering a classic Vesper while playing a life-or-death game of poker in Casino Royale or taking shots of tequila with a scorpion on his hand in Skyfall, there are undoubtedly a few things Daniel Craig’s Bond could teach us about the art of drinking.
Before following in his father’s footsteps and becoming captain of the Enterprise, Jim Kirk (Chris Pine) was just another hooligan bar fly. One night, after a few drinks, he meets the lovely Uhura and offers to buy her a shot of Jack Daniel’s, which she refuses, along with his advances. After a few of her fellow Starfleet officers get involved, an impressive bar fight ensues. Let’s just say we’d let the future Captain Kirk buy us a shot of Jack.
Tom (Christopher Walken) gets a little too friendly with a starving damsel (Bernadette Peters) and tries to impress her with his dance moves. He offers the girl something to eat and drink in exchange for—well, you know. While he isn’t exactly an upstanding gentleman, we’d happily buy him a round if he’d show us some of those killer dance moves.
We can honestly say that there’s no one else we’d rather drink White Russians with than Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges). Who else in The Big Lebowski could be thrown into the back of a limo without spilling a drop of his cocktail? That takes some serious skill.
The first time Han Solo (Harrison Ford) meets Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker is in Mos Eisley’s cantina. They eventually strike up a deal, and he joins the crew, enduring everything from being frozen in carbonite by Jabba the Hutt to having to constantly save Luke from an unfortunate end. It’s a wonder Han Solo doesn’t find his way to the cantina more often...
No matter how much Frank Ricard (Will Ferrell) tries to fight it, he’ll always be Frank the Tank. Whether he’s reliving his glory days at a rager or streaking, how can you resist drinking with this party legend?
An aging actor suffering from a mid-life crisis, Bob Harris (Bill Murray) travels to Tokyo to film a commercial for Suntory Japanese Whisky. Between drinks, he meets the beautiful Charlotte (Scarlet Johansson). The movie gave us a whole new appreciation for hotel bars.
From guzzling wine out of a spittoon to pouring his most prized bottle of 1961 Château Cheval Blanc in a fast-food joint, Miles (Paul Giamatti) doesn’t hold back when it comes to drinking. We’d like to go with him on his next trip to wine country.
When Mrs. Robinson offers Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) a whiskey and makes her first attempt to “seduce” him, the recent college grad almost breaks down on the spot. After thinking over her offer, he meets her at a hotel, where she orders a Martini and he gets a room. We think what he really needed after that first whiskey was another drink and some sage advice. Next time, Ben. Next time.
Think you know the booze?
Let’s start with some basics.
