The Best Vodka Bars in New York

Crisp, clear vodka made quite the powerful imprint on U.S. drinking culture in the 1960s and ’70s. During this era of ill-fated cocktails, the clear spirit—easy to sip and easy to mix—was a comforting, no-frills nirvana. Although in recent years a bevy of imaginative bartenders hoped it would disappear in the name of more flavorful spirits like rye and pisco, the appeal of the simple vodka martini never wavered for the majority of Americans. Bars may continue to excite patrons with frothy gin libations, but as they also grow more democratic, they no longer snub vodka. Instead of raising their brows at the request for a bare bones vodka soda, bartenders are giving the spirit as much love and attention as the whiskey and rum that take center stage in their more adventurous concoctions. From a West Village institution to a neighborhood hangout in Queens, here are seven places to savor a refreshing vodka drink.
