When San Francisco’s Whitechapel opened in late 2015, it set the bar world abuzz with its immersive scenery and epic gin collection. Owners Martin Cate — the brains behind legendary Smuggler’s Cove — Alex Smith, and John Park created the ultimate gin lover’s destination and set the stage for a slew of awards, including both national and international recognition.
So it’s no surprise that when MGM Resorts International was looking for a new bar concept for one of its Las Vegas Strip properties, they approached the Whitechapel team. Reluctant to replicate a Victorian gin palace amid the bright lights of Sin City, Smith turned to a more obvious option for the next single-spirit venue. “The old saying that vodka pays the bills is very much the truth in Las Vegas, and the amount of flavored vodkas available today is truly shocking,” Smith said. With that inspiration, it was a short step to that ubiquitous vodka cocktail, the Cosmopolitan, and from there to the legendary TV series, “Sex and the City.”
After negotiating the rights to the show’s name from Darren Star Productions, the Whitechapel team set their sights on some pretty unbelievable offerings. According to a press release, Sex in the City will “carry the world’s largest selection of flavored vodkas” and feature the “world’s best Cosmopolitan” as its house cocktail.
In order to appeal to a more masculine demographic, the SATC-themed bar will also feature a secret speakeasy room—known as Mr. Big’s, in homage to Carrie’s paramour—with a full selection of cigars and an enviable whiskey collection. And you won’t have to wait long to visit: The opening date is set for early 2018.
