    Very interesting David. The only question is: if they didn't used charred oak back then, what did they used?
    If I am not wrong, glass was rather expensive. Stoneware... impracticable. Maybe they used toasted wood [oak] barrels. What I have heard is, that they used to use tasted barrels before... but I am not 100% sure.
