Musicians like to drink. A lot. From classic rock to hip hop to country, artists love singing about partying and have been known to name-drop their favorite spirits. Here are nine whiskey-referencing songs that will make you want to sing, dance and dream about being a rock star.
1. “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)” – The Doors
Originally a Bertolt Brecht poem set to music by German composer Kurt Weill in 1927, Jim Morrison and The Doors turned the song into an ode to barhopping 40 years later with help from the rarely-used Marxophone.
LIQUOR LYRICS: “Show me the way/ To the next whisky bar/ Oh, don’t ask why”
2. “All Summer Long” – Kid Rock
Hearing Kid Rock’s mashup of ‘70s classics (Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London”) takes you back to the good old days of relaxing by the water with your friends and some good old fashioned whiskey.
LIQUOR LYRICS: “Sipping whiskey out the bottle, not thinkin ’bout tomorrow/ Singing Sweet Home Alabama all summer long”
3. “Cheers (Drink To That)” – Rihanna
LIQUOR LYRICS: “Cheers to the freaking weekend/ I drink to that, yeah yeah/ Oh let the Jameson sink in”
That’s right—Bad Gal RiRi’s drink of choice is the most popular Irish Whiskey in the world, and “Cheers (Drink To That”) somehow successfully samples Avril Lavigne’s “I’m With You.” We’ll definitely drink to that.
4. “Irish Celebration” – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Macklemore, one half of the Seattle-based hip hop duo, is Irish and proud of it. Released before the Grammy-winning album The Heist, “Irish Celebration” features the rapper reminiscing about the days when he used to drink cheap Kentucky bourbon.
LIQUOR LYRICS: “Now with whiskey in our veins/ Claiming we’re the bravest men/ I drank Old Crow, but pretended it was Jameson”
5. “Jack Daniels” – Eric Church
Who can’t relate to this tune about everyone’s favorite Tennessee whiskey from hard-rocking country singer Eric Church? Old No. 7 is a staple at most shindigs, and there’s no shame in losing a fight to JD.
LIQUOR LYRICS: “But he don’t fight fair like daddy taught me to/ Her memory turned my head and then he snuck up from behind/ Yeah, Jack Daniels kicked my ass again last night”
6. “Shots” – LMFAO ft. Lil Jon
While this song is pretty annoying, you have to respect LMFAO’s decision to bring in crunk rapper Lil Jon to turn things up. Three Wise Men combines Johnnie, Jack and Jim, and while you can shoot it, it is generally preferred on the rocks or served neat.
LIQUOR LYRICS: “Jello Shots/ Kamikaze/ Three Wise Men”
7. “TiK ToK” – Ke$ha
When Ke$ha first broke into the scene in 2009, we learned right away about the synth-pop star’s affinity for Jack Daniels. Known for her hard-partying ways, Kesha would go on to release more drinking songs like “Party at a Rich Dude’s House” and “Die Young.”
LIQUOR LYRICS: “Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack/ Cause when I leave for the night, I ain’t coming back”
8. “Tubthumping” – Chumbawamba
Whether you love or hate this ‘90s one-hit wonder, you know you can’t resist singing along to the party anthem after downing a few whiskeys.
LIQUOR LYRICS: “He drinks a whiskey drink, he drinks a vodka drink…”
9. “Whiskey Rock-A-Roller” – Lynyrd Skynyrd
The masters of Southern rock had a reputation for heavy drinking, and “Whiskey Rock-A-Roller” is everything you want from a Skynyrd song: a tight opening riff, a smooth solo and, of course, lyrics about partying on the road.
LIQUOR LYRICS: “Well, I’m a whiskey rock-a-roller/ That’s what I am/ Women, whiskey and miles of traveling/ Is all I understand”
