Root beer is finally living up to its name…again. This subtly spicy and sweet drink got a grown-up makeover this past summer, which took the beer industry by storm. But did you know that root beer was originally an alcoholic beverage? Yes, you can thank Prohibition for the softer, family-friendly version soda drinkers enjoy today.
Now, the summer’s retro niche beverage is proving its staying power with Best Damn Brewing Co.’s spin on the boozy sassafras-root flavored soda. The hard root beer trend transitioned into the cold weather months when Anheuser-Busch launched the new brand platform’s first brew, Best Damn Root Beer, on December 14.
Kathy Sattler, brand director for Best Damn Brewing Co. told USA Today: “We like to say this is an easy-drinking hard root beer. It smells, it looks and it tastes like the root beer flavor you know and love, but in an adult version.”
If you’re a root beer lover, there’s nothing hard about making the switch to this alcoholic take on the childhood favorite; the sweet brew is aged on vanilla beans and clocks in at a super-drinkable 5.5% ABV.
